Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

A late-night inspection by CP Pravin Pawar’s special squad exposed shocking scenes outside wine shops and country liquor stores inebriated men loitering, urinating in public, sleeping on streets, hurling abuses, and engaging in brawls. The very next day, the police summoned liquor vendors and warned them of strict action if such scenes persisted.

With Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar contributing the highest liquor revenue to the state, wine shops and bars have multiplied over the last 15 years. However, many alcoholics drink outside these shops instead of in licensed bars, causing nuisance and distress to residents. Women, young girls, and senior citizens struggle to pass through these areas, which often witness gang fights and assaults. Despite multiple complaints, shop owners have ignored the issue for profit. Now, the State Excise and Police Departments have joined forces to curb the menace. The special squad, disguised in plain clothes, surveyed the city and Waluj area, uncovering a grim reality. In response, Commissioner Pawar ordered an urgent meeting with State Excise Superintendent Santosh Zhagde, DCP Prashant Swami, and PI Sandeep Gurme, who outlined immediate corrective measures.

Tough measures announced

Shopkeepers allowing alcohol consumption near their premises or facilitating it through food stalls will face strict action. "Paying revenue does not mean impunity. If people drink outside your shop or misconduct occurs, you will be held accountable," officials warned.

Citizens can file complaints against problematic wine shops, prompting swift action.

All shops must deploy security guards and install advanced CCTV cameras.
