Vehicle count in district nears 2 million; RTO collects Rs 456 crore in a year

Revenue collected by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) through taxes, fees, and penalties paid by vehicle owners continues to rise every year. Over the past year, the RTO has generated a total revenue of Rs 456 crore. Notably, this marks an increase of Rs 73.13 crore compared to the previous year.
During the financial year from April 2025 to March 2026, as many as 94,729 new vehicles were registered, taking the total number of vehicles in the district to over 1.956 million (19.56 lakh), bringing it close to the 2 million mark.
The RTO collects government revenue through various channels such as new vehicle registrations, driving licences, and penalties for traffic rule violations. Every year, the office is given a revenue target, which has been consistently increasing. For the financial year 2025–26, the RTO was assigned a target of Rs 420 crore. Surpassing expectations, it achieved 109% of the target by collecting Rs 456 crore.
Year-wise RTO revenue:
2022–23: Rs 299.73 crore
2023–24: Rs 323.52 crore
2024–25: Rs 382.87 crore
2025–26: Rs 456 crore
