Aurangabad, April 8:

A former corporator today has locked the Zone Number 6 office (in Cidco) of Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) when his demand to increase 'ghanta gadis' and lifting of garbage by the private contractor was not fulfilled. The office, however, was unlocked after the ward officer Meera Chavan assured of considering his demands.

The AMC had appointed Hyderabad-based Reddy Company to lift garbage from door to door and transport the waste to the processing plants. The former corporator Damu Anna Shinde was demanding more ghanta gadis in Thackeraynagar, N-2 ward; deployment of contractor's staff to lift the garbage by visiting door to door etc for the past two months. The demands were not fulfilled. The disappointed Shinde arrived at the ward office today at 10.30 am and locked the ward office. There was no senior or competent officer present in the office. Some personnel were inside and some of them were left outside. There were few citizens, who had come to pay the tax, also bore the brunt.

The ward officer reached the office, had a discussion with him and assured of taking necessary action. Shinde then unlocked the office. He informed Chavan that the hospital waste is also not being picked by the garbage contractor. She informed him that there is a separate agency to lift the Bio-medical waste. However, she instructed the garbage contractor to lift the remaining garbage in the ward. Chavan and Shinde then inspected the ward. During her visit to a hospital, the ward officer instructed the management not to mix the garbage with the Bio-medical waste.
