Maharashtra School Holiday: Are Schools Closed During State Mourning Over Deputy CM Ajit Pawar’s Death? – Check Details Here
Maharashtra School Holiday News: Maharashtra is observing a three-day state mourning from January 28 to January 30, 2026, following the sudden death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash in Baramati on Wednesday. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis issued official orders announcing the mourning period as grief spread across the state. During this time, no government-sponsored public celebrations, cultural programmes, or entertainment events will be held, and the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings across Maharashtra.

All government and private schools and colleges across the state were closed on Wednesday, the day of the accident. The state school education directorate issued the official holiday circular around 3 p.m., by which time most schools had already completed their morning sessions. However, institutions running afternoon sessions were informed accordingly.
As the mourning period began on Wednesday and continues through Friday, there was confusion that all government and private schools would remain closed till January 30. However, schools were closed only on January 28. There will be no school holiday on Thursday and Friday, and educational institutions are expected to function as usual on January 29 and January 30.
State Mourning Guidelines:
Flags at half-mast: All government buildings in the state will fly the national flag at half-mast during the three-day mourning period.
Government events canceled: No official entertainment or cultural programs will be held.
State funeral: Full state funeral for Ajit Pawar will be held in Baramati on January 29.
