Hill stations like Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, Matheran, and Chikhaldara have long been known for their cool and refreshing climate. However, these serene getaways are now grappling with an unexpected surge in temperatures.

By the second week of April, the mercury began to rise alarmingly. Lonavala recorded a high of 38°C on Monday, while Igatpuri and Toranmal saw temperatures touch 39°C — levels unheard of in these traditionally cool regions.

What’s causing the heat spike?

Global warming and the influx of hot winds have led to an overall increase in maximum temperatures.

Rising land surface temperatures are contributing to the warming trend.

Uncontrolled urbanization — increased vehicular traffic, concrete construction, and rapid infrastructure development in tourist areas — is intensifying the heat.
