For several centuries, on Ashadhi Ekadashi, lakhs of Warkaris from Maharashtra and neighbouring states march around 230 kms from Dehu and Alandi (in Pune), with the 'palkhis' bearing the 'padukas' (foot imprints) of Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj to Pandharpur.

Considering the prevalence of covid, only ten of the oldest palanquins which come every year shall be permitted for the festival to Pandharpur. The state government has allowed to take the 'palkhis' (palanquins) by bus to Pandharpur this year in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. But Warkaris have demanded that the state government reconsider the decision. The BJP has also demanded that the government should allow Wari on foot under all conditions.

State Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has clarified his role of the decision. The tradition of Wari should be maintained, but care has been taken, we dont want to repeat what happened in Kumbh Mela, said Ajit Pawar.

Even last year, Pandharpur's Wari was not allowed on foot due to the corona. But this time it was demanded that on foot Wari be allowed. Unlock has begun in the state. On the same background, it was demanded that the government should take measures for on foot Wari. However, the state government has made it clear that millions of devotees come together on foot and therefore the decision cannot be taken at the risk of corona. The state government has taken the decision after discussing with Warkari, police, all administration officials and others.

"The tradition of Wari that has been going on for years should be maintained, but now the corona is still there. It should also be considered. The same restrictions were imposed on Wari last year. The same restrictions were not imposed this time. The decision regarding the Palkhi ceremony has been taken in coordination, "said Ajit Pawar."We respect the sentiments of the Warkari community. The health interests of the state should also be taken into consideration. There is a possibility of a third wave of corona. Therefore, the decision has to be taken with all these factors in mind. , he clarified.
