Shiv Sena leader Dr.Neelam Gorhe has been elected unopposed as the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Council. After BJP nominee Bhai Girkar withdrew his candidature, it was announced that Nilam Gorhe was elected unopposed.

The decision to hold the election of the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Council was taken on the first day of the two-day monsoon session of the Legislature, which began with several restrictions.

The ruling MVA named Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe for election for the post of Maharashtra Legislative Council's deputy chairperson, while the opposition BJP had fielded its leader Vijay alias Bhai Girkar.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray also congratulated Dr Neelam Gorhe on her unopposed election as the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Council.

Gorhe had held the post for a brief period before her previous term as a member of the Legislative Council ended in April this year. The Sena leader became a member of the Upper House again in the subsequently election.

Earlier, the BJP party had called for postponing the election for the post of deputy chairperson in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.

The council chairman Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar, however, maintained that it was prerogative to schedule the election.
