Holi Crackdown in Mumbai: 16,727 Challans Issued, ₹3.17 Crore Fines Collected

In view of massive public gatherings and to prevent road accidents during Holi and Dhulivandan celebrations, the Mumbai Traffic Police conducted a special traffic enforcement drive across the city. The special campaign was carried out from 12:00 am to 7:00 pm on March 3, 2026, at major junctions, busy roads and highways across Mumbai.

To ensure that traffic norms were not flouted in the festive enthusiasm, police set up multiple checkpoints and took strict action against violators. The drive focused particularly on serious offences such as drunk driving, over speeding, riding two-wheelers without helmets, triple-seat riding, signal jumping, no-entry violations, and driving on the wrong side.

During the operation, a total of 16,727 challans were issued and fines amounting to over ₹3.17 crore were recovered.

Drunk  Driving

As part of the special drive, 159 cases of drunk driving were registered. The concerned motorists are being produced before court, and action has been initiated to suspend their driving licences under the Motor Vehicles Act. Police reiterated that driving under the influence of alcohol is not only a punishable offence but can also prove fatal.

Violation-Wise  Action  and  Fine  Details

According to official data, the following violations were recorded during the drive:

Riding without helmet: 4,317 challans; ₹42,97,000 fine collected

Obstructing free flow of traffic: 2,532 challans; ₹29,64,000 fine

Signal jumping: 610 challans; ₹5,90,000 fine

Driving without valid licence (MDL): 431 challans; ₹3,89,500 fine

Triple-seat riding: 530 challans; ₹5,27,000 fine

No-entry/one-way violations: 278 challans; ₹3,12,500 fine

Unnecessary honking: 2 challans; ₹1,000 fine

Wrong-side driving: 20 challans; ₹8,29,100 fine

Over speeding: 4,486 challans; ₹18,67,650 fine

Other traffic violations: 2,603 challans; ₹1,99,91,650 fine

In total, 16,727 challans were issued, resulting in the recovery of over ₹3.17 crore in penalties.

The entire operation was supported by extensive use of CCTV cameras, the e-challan system and breath analysers. This enabled authorities to identify offenders promptly and ensured faster, transparent and more effective enforcement.

The Mumbai Traffic Police have appealed to citizens to celebrate festivals responsibly. Motorists have been urged not to drink and drive, to wear helmets and seat belts, adhere to speed limits and strictly follow traffic rules to ensure public safety.
