Mumbai: BMC to Modernise Traffic System with ₹33 Crore Signal Upgrade Project

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to enhance and modernize traffic management across the city, including both eastern and western suburbs. To achieve this, a tender worth ₹33 crore has been initiated for the maintenance of Area Traffic Control (ATC) signal systems as well as non-ATC roads. Under this project, all types of signal infrastructure will be upgraded and maintained over a two-year period from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2028. The entire process will be carried out under the supervision of the civic body’s traffic department to ensure smooth and efficient implementation.

As part of the initiative, all road traffic signal junctions will undergo regular preventive and corrective maintenance. This includes upgrading existing vehicle and pedestrian signals, optimizing signal timings, and installing advanced vehicle detection cameras along with their upkeep. The project also covers damage repairs, such as replacing faulty signal controllers, poles, cables, and cameras. Additionally, work like trenching, laying pipelines, and shifting signals due to civic infrastructure projects will be undertaken. Contractors will also be responsible for repairing any damage caused by accidents, ensuring uninterrupted traffic operations.

Senior officials believe that this project will significantly improve Mumbai’s traffic management by making it smarter, faster, and more efficient. The contractor will bear complete responsibility for ensuring that all signal junctions operate smoothly in a fully adaptive mode. Furthermore, the scope of work includes the installation of new traffic signal junctions, along with their testing and commissioning. Regular maintenance of signal poles, controllers, cables, and power supply systems, as well as routine cleaning, will also be mandatory under the contract, ensuring long-term reliability and efficiency of the city’s traffic infrastructure.
