The accident occurred when a young man riding from Malad towards Dahisar was hit by a fast-moving car. The impact was so severe that the motorcycle was completely mangled, and the rider sustained serious injuries to his shoulder.
The car driver fled the scene immediately after the collision. However, what shocked onlookers even more was the reaction of the crowd present at the spot. Instead of helping the injured youth, several people were seen recording videos on their mobile phones while he lay on the road writhing in pain. No one stepped forward to rush him to the hospital.
At that moment, Zone-12 Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mahesh Chimte happened to be passing through the area. Noticing the gathering, he immediately stopped his vehicle to assess the situation.
Seeing the injured youth bleeding and unattended, DCP Chimte set aside protocol and personally assisted him. He helped the victim into the front seat of his official vehicle and drove him to a hospital in Dahisar without delay.
Upon reaching the hospital, the senior officer ensured that the injured youth was admitted immediately and personally spoke to doctors to expedite treatment. According to hospital sources, even a slight delay in medical attention could have proved fatal.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing concern over bystander apathy, while also showcasing the humane side of the Mumbai Police.
