Jammu and Kashmir: Massive Avalanche Hits Sonamarg, Houses Buried Under Snow; Video Goes Viral

A massive avalanche buried houses and hotels in Jammu and Kashmir's Sonamarg on the night on Tuesday, January 27. Avalanche which struck the Sarbal area of Ganderbal district at 10.13 pm covered houses and cars in clouds of snow. 

The incident caught on CCTV camera installed in the area shows a large amount of snow sloping down from the mountain, covering residential structures and hotels. However, no reports of injuries or casualties were reported in the incident. 

The authorities had already warned on Monday about a high-intensity avalanche likely to hit Sonamarg, following continuous snowfall across the valley. Some parts of the Union Territory reported snowfall and rainfall.

The airport in Srinagar had cancelled 58 scheduled flights, including 29 arrivals and 29 departures, on Tuesday due toa  slippery runway caused by rain and snowfall. The Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed due to snow accumulation between the Qazigund and Banihal stretch, officials said, adding that no traffic was being allowed even as snow clearance operations were underway.
