TMC-BJP Clash in Kolkata: Clashes broke out between supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in central Kolkata on Saturday shortly before a rally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leaving a police officer and a BJP leader injured.  According to the reports, The violence occurred near Girish Park, about five kilometers from Brigade Parade Ground, where PM Modi was scheduled to address a gathering marking the conclusion of the BJP’s statewide “Parivartan Yatra” ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Reports said that the supporters of both parties threw stones at each other and raised slogans as BJP workers were marching toward the rally venue. The officer-in-charge of Bowbazar police station, Bappaditya Naskar, was injured while attempting to control the situation. The BJP also claimed that its north Kolkata district president Tamaghno Ghosh and several party workers were hurt during the clashes. Ghosh was later reportedly taken to a hospital for treatment.

BJP leaders alleged their supporters were attacked without provocation while heading to the rally and claimed several vehicles, including buses carrying party workers, were damaged. However, leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress rejected the allegations. State minister Shashi Panja claimed BJP supporters attacked her residence in the Girish Park area and damaged window panes.

Panja alleged that BJP supporters traveling to the rally carried bricks and bottles and began the violence after tearing down posters in the area that read “Boycott BJP.” She said stones were later thrown toward her house during the confrontation.

BJP leaders denied the accusation and instead alleged that Trinamool Congress activists pelted stones at their supporters and buses passing through the locality. Some BJP members also claimed police were initially slow to respond.

Police later deployed additional personnel to the area and brought the situation under control, dispersing the rival groups as tensions rose in the neighborhood. Several shopkeepers closed their establishments amid the unrest.

The clashes occurred shortly before Modi’s rally at Brigade Parade Ground, where the prime minister was scheduled to address a large gathering and announce development projects worth about Rs 18,680 crore.

The rally marked the culmination of the BJP’s monthlong Parivartan Yatra across West Bengal as the party seeks to strengthen its campaign against the ruling Trinamool Congress ahead of the state Assembly elections.
