Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday thanked the PGI Hospital doctors and paramedical for staff for treating the COVID-19 warrior policeman whose hand was severed and reimplanted in a clash while imposing curfew restrictions to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Harjeet Singh, whose left hand was severed in a clash by Nihang Sikhs in Patiala on April 12, was discharged from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here.

"Happy to share that SI Harjeet Singh has been discharged from PGI, Chandigarh today. I thank doctors, nurses, paramedics and all the staff of PGI for taking good care of him," the Chief Minister tweeted.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjeet Singh has been promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspector (SI) in recognition of his exemplary courage, while three other police personnel involved in the incident have been awarded the Director General's Commendation Disc.

His hand was successfully reimplanted in an eight-hour surgery by doctors at the PGI.

Expressing solidarity with him, Punjab Police chief Dinkar Gupta along with 80,000 men in uniform on April 27 wore his name on their chests.
