Thane: ‘Little Accident’ Remark Sparks Outrage After Teen Driver Kills 42-Year-Old Cyclist in Kalyan (Watch Video)
A tragic road accident in Kalyan, located in Maharashtra’s Thane district, claimed the life of a 42-year-old cyclist after he was struck by a car driven by a 17-year-old boy. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening and has triggered widespread outrage among residents after details of the accused’s behaviour surfaced. Authorities confirmed that the minor was behind the wheel at the time of the crash. The case has drawn attention to issues of underage driving and negligence, with locals demanding strict action against those responsible for allowing such a serious violation to occur.
The deceased has been identified as Shrinivas Tandle, a respected figure in the local business community and associated with one of the oldest cloth establishments in Kalyan. Police officials stated that the collision took place on a stretch of the Kalyan Ring Road that is still under construction and not officially open for public use. The road runs alongside the Ulhas River, raising further concerns about safety and access restrictions. Investigators are now examining how vehicles were able to use the incomplete stretch despite it being closed to regular traffic movement.
CCTV footage from the accident site captured the horrifying moment when a speeding car, believed to be a Hyundai i20, rammed into Tandle’s bicycle. The impact was so intense that he was flung several metres into the air before crashing onto a pedestrian pathway. He succumbed to his injuries instantly due to the severity of the collision. The visuals have since circulated widely, intensifying public anger and grief, as many questioned the reckless driving and lack of supervision that led to such a fatal outcome on a restricted roadway.

During the investigation, police discovered that the car involved in the accident is registered in the name of the accused teenager’s mother, who is now also under scrutiny. Officials are probing whether the parents displayed negligence by permitting their underage son to drive the vehicle. In a development that further angered the public, the accused allegedly fled the scene after the crash and later described the fatal incident as a “little accident” on social media. The insensitive remark has drawn strong criticism from citizens and authorities alike.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Zende confirmed that the accused is a minor and currently absconding, with efforts underway to trace him. He stated that the vehicle has been seized and investigations are focusing on determining the accountability of the parents in the matter. Meanwhile, Tandle’s family revealed that he had purchased the bicycle just a day before the tragedy as part of an effort to improve his fitness after gaining weight. Police have launched a detailed probe, analysing CCTV footage and gathering evidence, with further legal action expected as the investigation progresses.
