She is the daughter of the President of the Nationalist Congress Party, Sharad Pawar. In 2009, she contested the elections for the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency and won. This constituency was previously represented by her father. She is a Member of Parliament, representing Maharashtra in the Lok Sabha.In 2011, she launched a statewide campaign against female foeticide.
