Aurangabad, Dec 4: Goygaon village in Vaijapur tehsil of the district was rocked by the suicides of a debt-ridden farmer and his son in quick succession, on Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Suresh Mote (24) and his father Kailas Appasaheb Mote (55, Goygaon). They committed suicide in the nearby Kangoni village. The police have registered a case of accidental death.
According to police sources, Kailas Mote owned eight acres of farmland at Kangoni. Both the father and son had been reeling under depression for few days after their crops were damaged due to excessive rainfall, said one of the villagers.
They had been finding it difficult to repay loans taken from a bank, society and individuals, said Prakash Aher, former village sarpanch.
Unable to cope with the difficult and distressful times, Suresh allegedly hanged himself from a Babul tree at Kangoni on Thursday around 4 pm. His last rites were performed at 9 pm on the same day.
Within a couple of hours, his father also consumed some poisonous stuff and threw himself into a well in the same farm to end his life.
After getting the information, policeman Razzakh Shaikh rushed to the spot and conducted an inquest. The last rites of Kailas were conducted on Friday afternoon.
