Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
A middle-aged woman and a young man posing as customers scammed a jewellery store and fled with a 22.950-gram gold chain worth Rs 2.16 lakh. The deception came to light after the jeweller discovered the suspects had swapped real ornaments with fake ones on Sunday.
On March 7 at 8 pm, a 25-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman entered Jadgawwala Jewelers, located on Kranti Chowk to Railway Station Road, and asked to see gold chains. After examining multiple designs, they selected a 22-carat, 22.950-gram chain. To make the payment, they handed over two gold bangles and a pair of earrings, requesting an exchange. Narendra Ambilwade, who was responsible for verifying the jewellery, confirmed it was gold. The duo pretended they needed additional money and left, introducing the man as Chirag Gautam from Nyaynagar.
Fraud exposed the next day
On March 8, salesman Akash Dahiwal contacted the number provided by the suspects. Initially, the man claimed he would return by evening but later disconnected the call. Suspicious, the staff rechecked the jewellery left behind and discovered it was fake. Further inquiries revealed that no such person named Chirag Gautam lived in Nyaynagar.
Police investigation underway
Realizing the scam, Jadgawwala Jewelers complained to PI Atul Yerme at Osmanpura Police Station. The police have registered an FIR, and PSI Amit Gore is leading the investigation. Authorities are examining CCTV footage and tracking phone records to identify and apprehend the suspects.
