Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The roof of the students' hostel of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) suddenly collapsed on Tuesday evening. Fortunately, no one was injured.

This incident has spread an atmosphere of fear among the students. The hostel building was built about 50 years ago and is in a dilapidated condition at different places. The roof of the porch area leading from the open space of the hostel to the toilet suddenly collapsed on Tuesday evening. Upon receiving information about it, GMCH Dean Dr Shivaji Sukre immediately informed the officials of the B and C Department.

He visited the spot along with the officials of the B and C Department and ordered the removal of the collapsed portion. Accordingly, the debris was removed immediately.

Need for new hostel

The work of supporting the lower part of the collapsed roof will be taken up on Wednesday. To avoid inconvenience to the students, the administration made temporary arrangements and provided accommodation to 8-10 students in other boys' rooms. The students said that a new hostel is needed as this hostel is posing a danger.

Cracks in roof; help for clothes for student

The roof of the second floor collapsed, causing cracks in the roof of the lower floor. Pankaj Agle, a student from the hostel who wanted to go to his village, could not enter his room (number 219) in the hostel to collect his bag. Dr Sukre provided him with financial aid to go to his village and buy new clothes.
