Aurangabad, July 23:

The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in association with the police and RTO will be launching a drive to seize and lift abandoned vehicles lying on the roadsides and creating an obstruction to the traffic as well as in the cleaning of the roads, from August 2. The drive will continue for a month.

The AMC administrator A K Pandey, however, instructed the civic officials to serve one week's notice, prior to taking action.

A joint meeting was held at AMC headquarter in presence of the RTO and police officials. The additional municipal commissioners B B Nemane, R P Nikam, head of solid waste management (SWM) Nandkishore Bhombe, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) Suresh Wankhede, assistant RTO Rameshchandra Kharade, AMC executive engineer (roads) B D Phad, executive engineer (mechanical) D K Pandit, all nine ward officers, nine ward engineers and staff of anti-encroachment squad including the designated officers were present in the meeting.

Pandey while guiding the officers said, " It has been observed that many vehicles had turned into a scrap and are lying on the roadsides. The illegal parking of these vehicles is posing obstructions to the traffic as well as sanitary staff for cleaning. The squad comprising officials from all three departments should serve seven days' notice to the garage owners or vehicle owners. If they fail to take action then the AMC should seize the vehicles. The drive to seize the abandoned vehicles should start from August 2."

The squad comprising AMC, RTO, and police officers will be preparing a video of the action with the number plate of the vehicle and submit the recording in CD form to the AMC deputy commissioner. The report will be further sent to the RTO for action like cancellation of the vehicle registration and drivers' license. The expense of lifting vehicles will be recovered from the owner of these abandoned vehicles, as per the order.
