The Godavari Study Group’s report, recommending a 7% cut in water released to Marathwada from dams in Ahilyanagar and Nashik, is still not available in Marathi. The deadline to file objections ends today, April 15.
As per the equitable water distribution law, if Jayakwadi dam storage falls below 65%, water must be released from upstream dams. This guideline is based on the Mendhegiri Committee report, upheld by both the Supreme Court and High Court.
Despite this, leaders from Ahilyanagar and Nashik oppose releasing water to Marathwada. In 2023, the state government formed a new committee led by former MERI officer Pramod Mandade, which recommended the 7% reduction.
The Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority (MWRRA) published the English version of the report on its website on February 14 and invited objections until April 15. Social groups from Marathwada had requested a Marathi translation and deadline extension, but neither was granted. On March 17, MWRRA informed the government that it had agreed in principle to provide the Marathi version, but no action followed.

Around 4,000 objections filed
Sources say nearly 4,000 objections have been submitted opposing the water cut. Had the report been in Marathi, the number might have been higher. Citizens from Nashik and Ahilynagar have reportedly submitted objections in favour of the cut.
