Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

A fund of Rs 710 crore has been approved for the construction of a new surgery building at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). This will receive administrative approval within the next 8 days, said the Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif in the Legislative Council on Friday.

Regarding the construction of the new surgery building at GMCH, MLC Chavan raised a starred question on Friday, drawing the attention of the house. The GMCH was established in 1960, and the surgery building here is over 55 years old, making the structure unsafe. MLC Chavan brought to the house's attention that the Public Works Department (PWD) has conducted a structural audit and issued a report stating that this building will not be usable for more than the next five years. The then Chief Minister had given instructions on September 17, 2024, to send a proposal for the construction of a new surgery building worth Rs 836.11 crore to the government for approval. Accordingly, the GMCH administration sent the proposal to the government.

Hence MLC Chavan raised the question regarding the action taken on the proposal for the new building. The opposition leader MLC Ambadas Danve, MLC Vikram Kale, MLC Sanjay Kenekar and others took part in the discussion. Five months ago, GMCH Dean Dr. Shivaji Sukre prepared the proposal. The guardian minister Sanjay Shirsat, MLA Pradeep Jaiswal, MLC Satish Chavan, medical education commissioner, secretary, director and others also put in the efforts for the approval of constructing the new surgery building.

Effort to start work within two months

In response to MLC Chavan's question, minister Hasan Mushrif said that on March 7, 2025, under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, a "High Power Committee" approved the construction of the new surgery building at GMCH. He further mentioned that administrative approval for this will be given in the next 8 days, and efforts will be made to start the construction work of the building within two months.

Contribution to enhancing patient services

The approval of the surgical building is the most satisfying development. This will significantly contribute to improving patient services at GMCH, said the GMCH Dean Dr. Shivaji Sukre.
