Aurangabad, March 7:

The number of people consuming alcohol in non-permitted hotels and open grounds has increased rapidly. Hence to keep such incidents in check, the city police recently conducted surprise raids on hotels and dhabas in their jurisdiction and caught alcoholics.

Alcohol is served in many small and large hotels in the city, even when drinking is not permitted. Due to growing incidents, the commissioner of police Dr Nikhil Gupta instructed police stations to conduct surprise raids on such establishments. Acting on the orders, the Jawaharnagar police recently raided the Sher A Punjab hotel in front of the Divisional Sports Complex and caught the owner Manjeet Singh Kartar Singh Sandhu, serving alcohol to customers. The Pundaliknagar also raided hotel Nisarg and took action against 8 persons including hotel owner Ashok Bangar and manager Bhagwan Satpute. The Krantichowk police raided Hotel Kites in front of the central bus stand and found customers consuming alcohol. A case has been registered against three persons, including hotel manager Sagar Borade. On Friday, Cidco police found that the Jadhav Bandhu hotel, was serving liquor without lisence. Case has been registered against six persons, including hotelier Deepak Gawai. Customers were also found drinking liquor without permission at Hotel Surya in Padegaon. Chawni police have registered a case against five persons, including hotelier Anil Mhaske. A case has been registered against eight persons, including hotel manager Sanjay Jadhav, in a police operation at Hotel Madhurya near High Court colony in Satara area. A case has been registered against Owais Anjum Hussain, manager of Kebab Junction Hotel in the railway station area, for providing drinking water and other facilities to customers for drinking alcohol.

Police hesitant take action

The police of the respective police stations are aware of the hotels serving unlicensed liquor. However, due to pressure, police turn a blind eye to such hotels.
