MS Dhoni is expected to return as the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for their upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday, April 5, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Dhoni’s return to captaincy comes as regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is doubtful for the match after suffering an injury during CSK’s previous loss to Rajasthan Royals (RR). Gaikwad was struck on the hand by Tushar Deshpande in the match and has not yet recovered fully. Gaikwad has been CSK’s top run-scorer this season, with two fifties in three innings, and his absence would be a significant blow to the team.
CSK batting coach Mike Hussey provided an update, stating that Gaikwad’s participation will depend on how he fares in the team’s net session on Friday, April 4. “Ruturaj Gaikwad’s participation in tomorrow’s game will depend on how well he recovers. He is still sore and we would take a call based on how he bats in the nets today,” Hussey said. “If he doesn’t play, not sure who will lead. But there is a strong chance that a young wicketkeeper might fill in.”
If Gaikwad is not available, Dhoni may return as captain, which could help boost the team. CSK has had a tough start to the season. They are third in the points table with one win from two matches. They won their opening match against Mumbai Indians but lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals. Dhoni, who stepped down as CSK captain just before the 2024 season, remains one of the most successful captains in IPL history. Under his leadership, CSK won five titles, the most recent in 2023. Fans will hope that Dhoni can guide the team to victory if he returns to captain the side.
