After South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt chose to field, openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali gave India a solid start with a 104-run stand. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma steadied the innings with a 52-run stand. Harmanpreet was bowled for 20 by Nonkululeko Mlaba, while Amanjot Kaur added 12. Deepti anchored the later stages, scoring 58 from 58 balls.
Richa Ghosh added quick runs with a lively 34 off 24 balls that featured three boundaries and two sixes. She was dismissed by Khaka in the closing overs. Deepti was run out off the final delivery.
Despite a few dropped catches, India built strong partnerships through the innings and came close to the 300-run mark. The total was the second highest ever in a Women’s World Cup final, behind Australia’s 356 for five against England in 2022.
For South Africa, besides Khaka’s three wickets, Mlaba, Nadine de Klerk, and Tryon took one each.
Brief scores: India 298/7 in 50 overs (Shafali Verma 87, Deepti Sharma 58, Richa Ghosh 34; Ayabonga Khaka 3/58).
