Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal who suffered a massive heart attack during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match yesterday is recovering well and is out of danger after doctors did angiogram followed by angioplasty. Former Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar informed mid-day that Tamim could slowly speak to the doctors late in the afternoon, which is very encouraging. “We were about to lose him in the morning. Fortunately, he is safe now, thanks to the doctors who treated him with utmost care,” Bashar said.
The team of doctors there found that there was a blockage in his artery. They gave him CPR. An angiogram was done, followed by angioplasty, and after a while, returned to his senses. Tamim was playing a match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club in Savar when he experienced chest discomfort. The authorities initially made arrangements to airlift him to Dhaka by helicopter, but he could not be flown from the BKSP ground and was taken to Fazilatunnesa Hospital. Tamim has been playing local matches and doing commentary stints since retiring from international cricket in January. Tamim, 36, has played 70 Tests and 243 ODIs for Bangladesh, scoring 5,134 runs and 8,357 runs respectively.
Tamim has been in impressive form in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL), being the fourth-highest run-scorer in the tournament. In seven matches, the left-handed batter has scored 368 runs at an average of 73.60 and a strike-rate of 102.50 with two centuries to his name. Earlier this year, in January, Tamim announced his retirement from international cricket for the second time, ruling out his participation in the Champions Trophy. Thereafter, he led Fortune Barishal to glory in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025.
