Virat Kohli achieved a significant milestone in T20 cricket on Monday as he became the first Indian batter to reach 13,000 T20 runs during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Indian Premier League match against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium. Kohli reached the landmark when he touched 17 runs in his innings, becoming the fifth batter overall to achieve this feat. The 36-year-old Kohli reached 13,000 T20 runs in his 386th innings. He is now the second-fastest batter to the milestone, behind West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who accomplished the feat in just 381 innings. Kohli surpassed English batter Alex Hales by nearly 90 innings to claim second place.

Kohli had already crossed 12,000 T20 runs during IPL 2024, becoming the second-fastest batter after Gayle, with 360 innings. Among Indian batters, Rohit Sharma holds second place with 11,851 runs in 438 innings. Kohli made his T20 debut on April 3, 2007, for Delhi in the Inter-State Twenty-20 Tournament, which later became the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He scored 35 runs in the match.

Over 8,000 of Kohli’s T20 runs have come in the IPL, where he continues to top the batting charts for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Match Overview

Mumbai Indians made key changes for this match, bringing back star pacer Jasprit Bumrah and experienced batter Rohit Sharma. Bumrah, who was recovering from a lower back injury, returned to strengthen MI's bowling attack. Sharma, listed as an Impact Player, was also available for selection.

Speaking at the toss, MI captain Hardik Pandya said, “This looks like a good track. Dew might come in later. When the wicket is cool, it stays good. When dew comes, it gets better. It always plays well for both teams. It’s time for us to get some rhythm, get some good cricket behind us, take the smarter options and do the right things. We are playing good cricket, but it’s just that at certain moments, we are missing out on certain things. If we can look after those, we’ll be able to get the rhythm.”
