The number of Marathi-medium schools in Mumbai dropped by over 100 in a decade according to the data shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) education department. The BMC's education department submitted this data to the Unified District Information System for Education. It was mentioned in the data report that there were 368 Marathi-medium schools in 2014-15 and in 2023-24 there were 262 Marathi-medium schools in Mumbai.

The Maharashtra government is making all the amends to promote the Marathi language. The government made the Marathi language compulsory in government and semi-government offices.

Why Marathi-Medium Schools Were Shut Down?

The major reason behind shutting down the Marathi-medium schools is the school choices made by parents. Now parents prefer sending their children to English-medium schools and if they do not get admission there they send them to Marathi-medium schools.

Enrollment In BMC Schools:The overall enrollment in the BMC school has increased in the last three years, including the Marathi-medium schools. Yet, the educators believe that the local government should make more efforts and stronger steps to keep running the Marathi-medium schools in the city.

In 2020, the Maharashtra government passed an act stating that all the schools in the state, of all the boards, will have to teach Marathi. In October 2024, the Marathi Language Policy was introduced to promote and boost the language.
