A third-year B.Tech student in Mathematics and Computing at IIT Patna died by suicide on Tuesday after jumping from the seventh floor of a building on the institute’s Amhara (Bihta) campus.

The exact reason behind the suicide remains unknown. Following the incident, a large number of students gathered on campus to protest and demand a thorough investigation. The protest created unrest, prompting the police to deploy additional forces to maintain order.

According to reports, the incident took place around 11:30 a.m., and IIT Patna police station received information at noon. A police team, along with IIT Patna Director Prof. T.N. Singh, arrived at the scene and found the student lying in a pool of blood near the hostel.

Police rushed him to Netaji Subhash Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Danapur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) II Pankaj Kumar Mishra said officers found the student in critical condition and rushed him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

"The student was a native of Telangana and was in his third year of B.Tech. The investigation is ongoing. Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide, but we are examining all possibilities," Mishra said.

The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team collected blood samples from the site. Officials also accessed some WhatsApp chats as part of the probe.

"We are further looking into the matter," the SDPO added.
