To make travel affordable for the citizens of India on national highways across India government is going to launch annual pass based on FASTag. This tag will be available for Rs 3000 and will be valid for one year from the date of activation for max 200 trips. This will likely to launch on the occasion of Independence day.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will take strict action against drivers who do not install FASTag in the designated place on the windscreen of their vehicle. The process of reporting such cases immediately and blacklisting FASTags has been expedited. The government is taking this step to prevent toll fraud and reduce congestion at toll plazas.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) said in an official statement that this step will make toll collection easier and better. The ministry also said that new schemes like annual pass system and multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling will be launched in the coming days.

Therefore, it is important to maintain the true identity of FASTag and the reliability of the system. Under this decision, agencies and contractors operating toll plazas have been directed to immediately report any loose FASTags. This will further streamline the system.

The government said in a statement that many times, vehicle owners deliberately do not affix FASTags to the windscreen (front glass) of the vehicle. This creates problems at the toll plazas.

This leads to congestion in the lanes, complaints of incorrect deductions and misuse at toll plazas with closed systems. Overall, the entire electronic toll collection system is broken, which causes unnecessary delays at the toll plazas and inconveniences other people travelling on the highway.

To ensure timely action, NHAI has provided a special email ID to which toll collecting agencies and contractors will have to immediately send information about loose or incorrectly installed FASTags. On receiving the report, NHAI will initiate the process of blacklisting or hot listing such FASTags.

Currently, more than 98% of vehicles plying on national highways across the country are using FASTag to pay toll. This has greatly improved the toll collection process. But some people do not install or keep FASTag properly, which affects the efficiency of the system and causes difficulties in toll collection.
