A baby born thrown in a field right after birth is undergoing treatment in the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). However, weighing only 1,200 grams, the baby is in critical condition and is struggling to survive. The incident took place on September 30, when the mother threw the newborn baby in the field, believing that it to be a girl child. However, after finding that the villagers have found a male infant in the village, the mother claimed that the baby was her. The baby was then shifted to the paediatrics department of the GMCH and is undergoing treatment since Wednesday. The baby''s condition has been critical since he was admitted here. The baby is suffering from an infection and is placed in a warmer and is being given artificial oxygen. The child welfare committee has sent a caretaker from the Indian social service centre to the GMCH. The doctors, nurses and caretakers are looking after the baby. The four-day-old baby needs 5 litres of oxygen per minute. Higher antibiotics are being given to keep the heart rate and blood pressure normal. Head of paediatrics department Dr Amol Suryavanshi, team leader (No 3) Dr Shilpa Pawar, Dr Amruta Madane, Dr Abhishek Jain, Dr Ubedur Rahman and the nurse are monitoring the baby 24 hours a day.
Dr Amol Suryavanshi said "A newborn baby should be born after at least 40 weeks and weigh at least 2.5 kg. But this baby weighs low. The baby appears to be born after 28 to 30 weeks. It is difficult to say whether the infection was caused by throwing it away at birth." Dr Shilpa Pawar said "The baby has low immunity and is on medication. We are trying to get him well as soon as possible."
