Aurangabad, June 13:

“No one, whether ‘Left’ or ‘Right’ideology supporters, has sympathy for the farming community. They have been agitating for the past many days, yet, there is no sympathy wave in the country for them,” lamented Chandrakant Wankhede, a veteran scholar on the farmers' movement.

He was speaking in an online lecture organised by Loksamvad Foundation on Sunday. A researcher on farmers Dr Ram Chavan presided over the programme.

Chandrakant Wankhede said that various reasons, including drinking liquor, are cited for farmers poverty but, middle and rich class people drink more liquor than farmers.

“Liquor is sold at concessional rate for soldiers. Why then farmers are blamed for this. Various items are made at one kg iron at the factory, but their weight remains the same. The farmers produce thousands of grains from a single grain,” he uttered.

Dr Kailas Ambhure conducted the proceedings while Dr Shilpa Jivrag proposed a vote of thanks. Dr Ram Chavan opined that even after Independence, the life of farmers had not changed.

“A farmer with 50 acres of land cannot educate their children. They have to borrow money on interest. This is the condition,” he added.
