The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation on November 5 announced that it has banned bursting or lighting of all fire-crackers at public places during the upcoming Diwali festival.

However, the use of soundless firecrackers like 'phooljhadi', 'anar' will be allowed between 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali night only. There are certain restrictions that need to be followed like one should burst the soundless crackers only near the society by keeping in mind the precautionary guidelines amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The ban has been proposed in view of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the early winter that has set in.

An official said that bursting firecrackers would release a lot of smoke and other pollutants which would adversely impact the health of Covid-19 patients and increase the risk of infection among the other high-risk categories like children or senior citizens.
