The Maharashtra Education Department has reduced the syllabus up to 25 percent of the students studying in classes 1 to 12 in the academic session of 2020-2021.

The schools remained closed across the country during the COVID-19 induced lockdown, due to which holding of regular classes in the classrooms was not possible.

The decision has been taken following the CBSE and ICSE boards move to reduce the syllabus which was later followed by many state Boards.

Maharashtra Education Department has now informed that the syllabus of at least 101 subjects from classes 1 to 10 will be reduced to bring the statistics to 25 %.The 101 subjects include 22 subjects of primary level classes and 59 at the higher secondary level. Earlier Varsha Gaikwad, Minister of School Education had confirmed the news by sharing a tweet on her personal twitter handle. The tweet read, “In view of COVID-19 in the state, the State Council for Educational Research and Training had proposed a 25 percent reduction in the syllabus for Classes I to XII of the academic session 2020-21. The state government has approved this proposal.”

Some chapters have been omitted from language sections of the syllabus, but grammar has not been omitted. Schools will teach grammar part of these chapters and it will be  considered for assessments.

The education department said that few parts of these chapters have been omitted and are set aside for self-study under the revised syllabus. The department further said, it has ensured that the reductions in syllabus have been made without changing the core of these chapters.

The school education minister also informed that the details of lessons that have been omitted have been uploaded on the website of the MSCERT.
