The revised prices of piped cooking gas and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) have come into effect from today (April 9) in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The price of CNG has been increased by Rs 1.50 per kg, while piped cooking gas has been hiked by Rs 1 per unit. With the revised rates, CNG will now cost Rs 79.50 per kg in Mumbai and Thane districts of Maharashtra. The revised price of piped gas is Rs 49 per unit.

Several public transport vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, taxis, and buses in Mumbai and the surrounding districts, depend on CNG fuel. On February 1, 2025, autorickshaw and black-and-yellow taxi fares were increased by Rs 3 in the MMR, following demands from transport unions. CNG prices were previously hiked twice in November and once again in December 2024. This marks the fourth hike in CNG rates within a span of six months.

Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) currently operates 358 CNG stations across the city. According to a report by The Times of India, approximately 5 lakh private cars in the MMR run on CNG. Many vehicles in the city use dual-fuel systems that combine CNG with petrol or diesel.

Mumbai has around three lakh autorickshaws and approximately 20,000 black-and-yellow taxis (popularly known as "Kaali Peeli" taxis), which rely on CNG for their daily operations. Additionally, over 24 lakh households in the MMR depend on piped gas for cooking.
