Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court on Thursday warned that the attack on traffic police can not be tolerated. High Court gave this warning to violators of traffic rules, The court said the matter is quite serious.

A PIL is pending in the court on this issue. The matter was heard before the division bench of justice Ravi Deshpande and justice Pushpa Ganediwala. During the hearing, the court has taken seriously the incidents of assault with traffic police personnel. Incidents of violation of traffic rules are increasing continuously in the city. According to the traffic police, as per the rules, when they try to catch the violators, then they are assaulted. The court said in its remarks that police personnel are threatened in different ways. Scuffles happen with them. “The traffic police perform their duty day and night to protect the citizens. This kind of rude behavior with them cannot be tolerated. Those who attack the traffic police with the law in hand, cannot be spared”, the court said.

Sought detailed information about the attacks

The High Court has given instructions to the commissioner of police to present a detailed account of the attack on traffic police personnel and the action taken against the attackers in the last one year. Similarly, the court also directed the home department secretary and the commissioner of police to suggest measures for the protection of the traffic police. For this, the officials concerned have been granted time till October 20. In this case advocate Srirang Bhandarkar is an amicus curiae. Advocate Sumant Devpujari pleaded on behalf of the government.

Priority case

Cases are pending in competent criminal courts against several accused who beat up the traffic police. The High Court has also expressed the need to settle all the cases by prioritising and speeding up the hearing. This order has given a good lesson to those who violate traffic rules.
