New Delhi [India], June 30 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who presided over the centenary celebrations of Delhi University (DU) on Friday and delivered the valedictory address at the event, ditched his cavalcade and switched to public transport.

Prime Minister Modi took a Metro ride from Lok Kalyan Marg station to Vishwa Vidyalaya Metro station here in the national capital on Friday morning to reach DU.

In his valedictory address, PM Modi said attending an event to mark 100 years of an institution is a rare privilege that no student should miss out on.

"Be it a student of DU or elsewhere, regardless of whether his college fest is being held in his college or somewhere else, what is most important is that he is involved in the event in some way or another. I consider it to be a privilege and honour to be here today. I am delighted that today, when Delhi University is celebrating its centenary year, I have the honour to be amongst all of you, revelling in this festive ambience," PM Modi said.

"Visiting a campus becomes all the more enjoyable and memorable when it is with friends or colleagues. On their way to a campus, a student and his friends would gossip, talk about the world, talk about anything from Israel to the Moon. 'Kaun si movie dekhi...OTT par vo series achhi hai' (The film I watched or the OTT series that is going well)...So, just like you, as I was reaching here today, I chatted with my young friends from Delhi Metro. Through the anecdotes that I heard on the way, I also derived some very interesting information," he added.

PM Modi also laid the foundation stone of three buildings of the university.

He laid the foundation stone for Delhi University's Computer Centre and the building of the Faculty of Technology, as well as the academic block, which will come up in the North Campus of the university.

Apart from PM Modi, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also attended the centenary celebrations of DU.

The varsity was established on May 1, 1922. In the last hundred years, the university has expanded to 86 departments, 90 colleges, and more than 6 lakh students.

It has also contributed to nation building.
