The Central government on September 14 banned the export of all varieties of onions except those cut, sliced or broken in powder form, with immediate effect, in an apparent move aimed at increasing domestic supply and reducing the prices.

Farmers in Maharashtra have taken to streets to lodge their protests against the ban on onion export. Farmers at the agricultural produce market committee (APMC) market in Nashik's Lasalgaon kept their shops shut on Tuesday.

Onion growers have now demanded that Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari should pay visit to them just like he met Kangana.

The Shetkari Sangharsh Sanghatana said that Bhagat Singh Koshyari is sensitive man and he will definitely visit those who fight for justice.

Hansraj Wadghule, a farmer leader from Nashik, Maharashtra, appealed to the governor in this regard through a video on social media.

The Centre abruptly put blanket ban on the export of onions. No advance notice was given to the farmers in this regard, he said. Koshyari had visited a soldier a few days ago. Not only that, he also met famous film star Kangana Ranaut over the BMC's demolition drive of her Bandra office, said Wadghule.

The farmers are distressed due to this decision. The prices of onions have fallen and it is affecting them, he added.
