Divisional commissioner directs top officers to carry out repair work of bridges, dams & weir gates before monsoon

Aurangabad, May 18:

Divisional Commissioner Sunil Kendrekar directed all the district collectors, Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Municipal Corporation and Council heads, superintendents of police, tehsildars, public works department officers of Marathwada to carry out survey and repair works of all big and small bridges, gates of dams and weirs before the monsoon begins.

He was speaking in a meeting organised at the divisional commissionerate on Tuesday to review pre-monsoon preparations. There is a challenge before the machinery to carry out survey and repair works as the rainy season is just two weeks away.

The Zilla Parishad Department was asked to inspect lakes and villages which are on the banks of the rivers and take preventive measures. Sunil Kendrekar said there should be 24 hours monitoring machinery at dams and irrigation projects.

“If there is any encroachment river basin, they should be removed immediately.

Information of rainfall in the catchment area of Godavari river at Nashik and Ahmednagar should be collected regularly by keeping watch on tributaries of Godavari,” he said.

Kendrekar said that the administration of Beed, Latur, Osmanabd, Nanded, Parbhani and Jalna should remain vigilant.

The district collector, tehsil office and Municipal Corporations should start disaster management centre while Municipal Corporations and Councils were instructed to survey dilapidated buildings and issue notice to them and repair nullahs, drainage and pipelines immediately.

Special inspector general of police K M Mallikarjuna Prasanna, district collector Sunil Chavan, Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Mangesh Gondawale, administrator of Aurangabad Municipal Corporation Astik Kumar Pandey, superintendent of police Mokshada Patil were present.

Marathwada attended the meeting through videoconferencing.

The divisional commissioner directed the PWD to survey gates on river and weirs and submit its report to the district collector concern.

Gates on many weirs need repair work. But, the repair work was not carried out because of the unavailability of the fund. There is a possibility of problems in storing and releasing water in these weirs.
