At least 40 have been arrested, and 300 FIRs have been registered against protesters for violent protests against the alleged assault of two minor girls at the schools in Badlapur of Thane district in Maharashtra. The arrested people will be presented in the session court today, August 21.

The situation in the area and at the Badlapur local railway station is normal. However, the internet will remain shut down until further orders. "The situation is normal, railway movement is also normal. No section has been imposed. Internet services will be suspended for a few days so that rumours do not spread," said GRP DCP of central Railway Manoj Patil.

Massive police deployment was also seen at the Badlapur Railway Station a day after the violent protest, which led to the pelting of stones at the police in the area on Tuesday, while later restored after the lathi-charge on the protesting crowd. Many protestors, as well as police personnel, were also reportedly injured.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) sought a detailed report from the Maharashtra government on the assault case and on the delay in filing an FIR in the case. The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Maharashtra, demanding a detailed report on the incident within two weeks.
