Former Bollywood actress Somy Ali has put out a post warning to expose the ‘Harvey Weinstein of Bollywood’ on Instagram. What is more interesting is that she has mentioned actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and claimed the Fanney Khan actress was also at the receiving end of the abuse and has shared her truth. However, what caught everyone's attention was the image used by the actress which was from her former boyfriend, Salman Khan's movie from the late 90s.
For the unversed, Somy had dated Salman for a few years in the ’90s and had also starred with him in a film. After leaving the industry, she got settled abroad and upon her return to India, she talked about her breakup with the superstar.
In an interview with Zoom TV, the actor said that it was she who broke up with Salman after he cheated on her.
“It’s been 20 years since I broke up with him. He cheated on me and I broke up with him and left. It’s as simple as that,” she said.
In 2018, Somy also talked about the then-ongoing #MeTooMovement that began with Harvey Weinstein’s trial in the West. She took to social media and revealed her own #MeToo story. Somy said she was raped at 14 and sexually abused at the age of five and she stood in support of all the survivors of the sexual abuse at the hands of powerful people.
Somy had come to India because she wanted to marry Salman. She fell in love with the actor after seeing his performance in the 1989 film Maine Pyar Kiya. She was just 16 then. Soon she and Salman began dating each other, and after staying together for over six years, they went their separate ways.
After she left Bollywood, Ali became involved with women's rights issues in South Asia. She works toward publicizing bringing the plight of rape and domestic violence victims.
Ali has written articles about rape victims Shazia Khalid, Sonia Naz and Mukhtaran Mai. "My goal is to help all of these women and make sure that every girl/woman in my country and universally is able to obtain an education and has her basic human rights," says Ali.
Somy Ali had a brief career in Bollywood. After starting her career as a model in Mumbai, she went on to feature in films such as Krishan Avtaar, Yaar Gaddar, Anth, Teesra Kaun, Andolan and Mafia and worked alongside prominent actors like Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Dharmendra, Govinda and Saif Ali Khan.
After Somy Ali, Salman Khan was linked to actresses like Sangeeta Bijlani, Katrina Kaif and Aishwarya Rai, who is now married to Abhishek Bachchan.
Salman Khan is rumoured to have been dating model Iulia Vantur currently.
