Mumbai, March 21: Crimes involving altered or fake vehicle license plates are on the rise, making it difficult to identify vehicles during criminal investigations or routine checks. To combat this, the Maharashtra Transport Department has made it mandatory for all vehicles in the state to install High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP). These plates are designed to prevent tampering, reduce the use of fake plates, and make it easier to identify vehicles on the road. According to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, this directive applies to all vehicles, especially those registered before 2019.There are around two crore vehicles in Maharashtra that were registered before April 1, 2019. In line with the safety guidelines issued by the central and state governments, the transport department began implementing the HSRP (High-Security Registration Plate) mandate from February this year. Initially, the deadline was set for March 31, 2025, which was later extended to April 30.However, due to issues like limited installation centers, a shortage of trained staff, and technical challenges, many vehicle owners faced difficulties in getting their plates installed. Considering these challenges, the transport department further extended the deadline to June 30, 2025.Despite the extensions, a large number of vehicle owners still haven’t complied. Responding to the situation, Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced a fresh extension of the deadline till August 15, 2025, following public demand and appeals. The Commissioner of the Transport Department has issued an official statement regarding the new deadline extension.High-security registration plates feature 'IND' written in blue, along with a chrome hologram stamp of the Ashoka Chakra on top. The vehicle registration number is embossed on the plate, making it tamper-proof and aiding in the identification of stolen or suspicious vehicles. The cost/price of HSRP plates varies depending on the type of vehicle.
